Co-parents, the holidays are approaching

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2024 | Family Law |

Now that Halloween is over and it’s no longer Election Season in America, many people are now turning their attention to the upcoming holiday season. In particular, many co-parents in California need to start coordinating schedules, travel and family traditions to better ensure a joyful upcoming season for their children. Navigating the holidays can be stressful, but with proactive planning and open communication, co-parents can work to create a positive experience for their children and minimize potential conflicts.

With this said, time is running out for a “proactive planning approach.” While there is little doubt that discussing holiday plans early can help avoid last-minute disagreements, there is not much time left to regard this task in any way that can be described as “early” in good faith. Therefore, if you co-parent with your ex, it’s time to review your custody agreement to see if holiday schedules are already outlined. And if they’re not, it’s time to sit down with your co-parent to create a schedule that respects each parent’s time with your child while allowing everyone to enjoy the season.

Making the effort

Children often look forward to holiday traditions and spending time with both sides of the family. If you can, try to create a plan that allows your child to spend quality time with each parent, even if that means adjusting your own schedule or expectations. With that said, it truly is the effort that counts. Showing that you’re willing to prioritize your child’s happiness can minimize stress for everyone and provide a sense of stability, even if things don’t work out in ways that you’d ordinarily describe as ideal.

Unexpected changes may arise, from weather-related delays to last-minute family events. It, therefore, can be helpful to stay flexible and have a backup plan. Consider working with your co-parent to create contingencies that will make it easier to adapt if plans need to shift. A cooperative attitude can prevent minor changes from escalating into bigger issues, keeping the holiday season as jolly as possible under the circumstances.
