What bad driving habits should I avoid?

On Behalf of | Jan 14, 2019 | Car Accidents |

It’s a duty of all drivers in California to behave safely and conscientiously when behind the wheel. Along with following traffic rules, motorists must also avoid driving behaviors that can get themselves and others in trouble. Geico explains a little more about these bad habits and what you can do to avoid them.

Not using your signal

Some drivers get lazy about using their signal every time they change lanes or make turns. While this may seem harmless when there is no other traffic on the road, it can easily lead to an accident because other drivers won’t know your intentions. Use your signals every time you drive, no matter how many other cars you’re driving with. This will ensure that you don’t forget to signal when driving in a high traffic area.

Driving too closely behind another vehicle is not only annoying, it can also lead to a serious accident. In the event the leading vehicle stops suddenly you want to be able to stop in time before a collision occurs. When you’re right behind the vehicle your chances of avoiding a wreck are significantly lower. If weather conditions are bad, it’s ok to leave a little extra room between yourself and other cars.

Texting and driving

Texting and driving is not only unsafe, it’s also illegal. Virtually all states of laws in place prohibiting this behavior and fines are often steep. When you text and drive your focus is pulled away from the road in multiple ways. As a result, this behavior is often compared to being drunk while driving, since your ability to respond is greatly impaired.
