You can’t always tell if a driver is distracted

On Behalf of | Sep 17, 2025 | Car Accidents |

In some cases, driver distraction is very obvious. Maybe you are in a rideshare vehicle and your driver is on the phone the entire time. Whether they are talking or texting, you can tell that they are distracted and they are putting you in danger because they may cause an accident. Naturally, the same is true if you see other drivers texting and driving around your vehicle.

But it is also important to remember that you can’t always tell that someone is distracted simply based on the outside signs. Distraction takes many different forms, which is part of what makes it so hard to avoid and why it leads to so many car accidents every year.

Daydreaming drivers

For one example, consider the fact that daydreaming is a top cause of driving distraction. You will not necessarily know if your rideshare driver is actually paying attention or thinking about the traffic around them. Just because they have their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel does not mean that they are not lost in thought. If they are not paying attention, they could still cause a serious crash.

Daydreaming is also a problematic distraction because the driver themselves may be unaware that it is occurring. If they make a conscious decision to pick up their phone, they are actively choosing to be distracted, so they at least know that it is happening. But someone may just start daydreaming involuntarily, not realizing until the accident takes place.

If you suffer serious injuries in a crash, be sure you know what legal options you have to seek compensation.
