How can I manage my emotions during a divorce?

Emotions can be tumultuous during a divorce. Not only can negative feelings impact a person’s physical and mental health, they can also have an impact on the divorce proceeding itself. That’s why proper management of your emotions is so important. Huffington Post offers a few tips in this case, which can help you process what you’re feeling in a healthy and fulfilling manner.

Think Through Your Feelings

When dealing with your ex-spouse you might feel a great deal of anger and resentment. However, it’s important you think through these feelings before reacting. For instance, if your ex requests a change in a child visitation schedule don’t immediately say no out of spite. Takes steps to respond in a civil manner even if you’re feeling the opposite. That way you can keep conflicts to a minimum, which is better for all involved.

Take a Rational Approach

Additionally, you’ll also need to approach problems rationally when they do occur. This involves considering all options before you and not just pushing for the outcome you prefer. This is particularly important when kids are involved. You want your children to enjoy a healthy relationship with both parents, which means you and your ex will need to work together on occasion to decide on important child-rearing topics.

Create Goals

Lastly, think about areas where you may be lacking in terms of control and set concrete goals for improvement. If you feel you’re quick to anger, work on responding to issues in an even-keeled way. Conversely, if you’re unreasonably sad as a result of the situation, take steps to improve your mood by spending time with friends or pursuing and activity you enjoy. With a goal in mind you can have something to work towards, which is a great way to motivate yourself to manage your emotions effectively.
